Mario Alvarado Cifuentes “Mac” was born and spent the first eight years of their life in Retalhuleu, Guatemala. Their parents’ desire to provide a better future for their children, combined with safety concerns, pushed their family to migrate to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2001. Mac received their A.A. in Political Science with High Honors from Diablo Valley College, a B.A. in Latin American Studies with Honors from UC Berkeley, and an M.A. in Chicana/o and Central American Studies from UCLA.

Mac is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Los Angeles. Their current research interests focus on Maya genders and sexualities.
